How to Read an Electric Scooter Spec Sheet

Scooter spec sheets are written to sell, not to inform. Six numbers matter, three of them are usually quoted in the most flattering possible form, and one of the most important is often left off entirely. Here is how to read the sheet before you read the price.

Motor power: continuous, not peak

A listing that says "1000W motor" almost always means peak power, which is what the motor produces for a few seconds under maximum current before heat forces it back. Continuous rated power is the number the motor can hold, and it is typically 40 to 55% of peak. It is also the number written into state vehicle-class law, which is why quoting peak power to your DMV will put your scooter in the wrong category.

Ask for the continuous rating. If a seller cannot or will not give it, that tells you something. As a rough guide, 250 to 350W continuous is enough for a light rider on flat ground, 500W handles moderate hills, and above 1000W continuous you are into machines that will exceed the speed limits many jurisdictions set for stand-up scooters.

Battery: watt-hours, not volts or amp-hours

Volts alone tell you nothing about capacity, and amp-hours alone tell you nothing without the voltage. Multiply them: a 48V 13Ah pack is 624 watt-hours, and watt-hours is the number that predicts range. A 36V 15Ah pack is 540Wh and will go less far than the 48V pack despite the bigger amp-hour figure.

Two packs of the same watt-hour rating are still not equal. Cell quality decides how the pack ages and how it behaves under load. Branded 18650 or 21700 cells from a named manufacturer will hold capacity for several hundred more cycles than unbranded cells, and the difference shows up in year three, not week three.

Range: divide by two and you are close

Range claims are measured in the best case for every variable at once: a light rider, low constant speed, flat ground, warm weather, a new pack. Real riding is none of those. Our range calculator runs the actual road load, and for most commuter scooters it lands somewhere between 50 and 65% of the advertised figure.

The physics is not mysterious. Energy per mile is the sum of rolling resistance, which scales with the weight you are carrying, and aerodynamic drag, which scales with the square of speed. Riding 5 mph slower saves more range than any accessory you can bolt on.

Brakes: the number the sheet buries

Brake type is frequently listed last or not at all, which is backwards. Options in ascending order of stopping power: regenerative only, foot brake over the rear fender, drum, mechanical disc, hydraulic disc. Regenerative braking alone is not adequate on any scooter that will exceed 15 mph, and a foot brake is a wear item you will be replacing.

Whatever the brakes, the tyre is what actually stops you, which is why the US Consumer Product Safety Commission's micromobility safety guidance keeps returning to small wheels and uneven surfaces. Small hard wheels have very little contact patch to work with.

Wheels: size and whether they hold air

Solid tyres never puncture and are noticeably worse at everything else. They transmit every crack in the pavement into your wrists, they have higher rolling resistance, and they grip less in the wet. Pneumatic tyres puncture and are worth it. Tubeless with sealant is the best of both.

Wheel diameter matters more than most buyers expect. An 8 inch wheel drops into a pothole that a 10 inch wheel rolls over, and the difference in how a scooter handles a broken road surface between those two sizes is larger than any suspension system will make up.

IP rating: usually absent, occasionally invented

The IP code is a two-digit standard: first digit for solids, second for water. IPX4 means splash resistant from any direction and is the realistic minimum for a scooter you might get caught out on. IPX5 and above tolerate jets. IPX7, which means immersion, is almost never genuinely achieved on a consumer scooter and a claim of it should raise an eyebrow.

Many manufacturers quote no IP rating at all, and a scooter with no rating is not waterproof. The battery compartment and the controller are the parts that fail, and water damage is very often excluded from the warranty.

Weight: the spec that decides whether you use it

A 55 lb scooter with a 40 mile range is worthless if your commute ends with two flights of stairs. Carry weight is the number most likely to turn a purchase into a hallway ornament. If you will ever lift it, handle one first.

The short version

  • Continuous watts, not peak watts.
  • Watt-hours, not volts or amp-hours on their own.
  • Halve the range claim.
  • Disc brakes, ideally hydraulic, on anything above 15 mph.
  • Pneumatic tyres, 10 inches or larger if the roads are rough.
  • IPX4 minimum, and treat a missing rating as no rating.
  • Lift it before you buy it.

When you have a shortlist, find a shop near you and ride the candidates up a hill. Fifteen minutes on a real gradient tells you more than any spec sheet.
